The League One summit is in reach, but Rosler has less lofty aspirations

Brentford boss Uwe Rosler is targeting no more than a top six finish for his men, despite sitting only a point behind the League One top two.

A Sam Saunders penalty and a superb finish from Clayton Donaldson, his 21st goal in all competitions this season, completed a second half fight back for the Bees as they beat play-off rivals Swindon Town 2-1 at Griffin Park on Tuesday night.

Defeat, after Saturday’s 2-0 humbling at Carlisle United, would have seen Rosler’s men slip out of the top six.

As it stands, three points from the visit of Preston North End on Saturday and victory at Sheffield United seven days later, might now fire the Bees to the summit.

But Rosler, who fielded eight players under the age of 22 in midweek, is not getting carried away, despite his side showing the steal to bounce back from a miserable first half display to down the Robins.

“We have to be in the top six. There is a long way to go. The players will take confidence out of this game,” he said.

“We have to approach Preston in the same way as we did against Swindon in terms of preparation, in terms of what to expect and we cannot drop by 1 per cent.

“If we do that you struggle to win games in this league.

“To be out played in the first half and come back to win it having clearly a problem in 2013 of not being able to come back, gives me the most pleasure.

“Everyone in our camp really needed that against the best team we’ve played in the league this season.”

It could have been very different after defender Harlee Dean’s howler at the back helped give the visitors the lead through Simon Ferry.

But the introduction of Saunders after the break and an all–action display from Donaldson, who was a handful all night, turned the table.

“Sam and Bradley [Wright –Phillips] lifted us for the last half an hour and Clayton [Donaldson] terrorised them. He was unplayable at times,” he added.

“We could have made it easier for us, if we had converted the two or three good chances we had.

“This is just the beginning of a period where we have to show the quality we did in the second half, in every single game from now.

“I expect a physical approach from Preston, but we are more than capable of beating them. If we play at 95 per cent, that will not be good enough.”
