Hercules Wimbledon's youngsters dominated the opening East Surrey League cross-country meeting staged in wet and windy conditions at Lloyd Park, Croydon, on Saturday.

Teenager Matthew Gibbons led the runners home with Hercules Wimbledon filling the top five places.

Gibbons earned his run-away victory as he completed the 2.5 miles course in 14 minutes 57 seconds to finish almost two minutes ahead of clubmate Jake Blayney (16:36), with Zoe Illis first girl in 16:43.

Zac Purnell was the top U13 boy finisher taking fourth place in 17:57, with Daniel Illis second in that age group in 18:08, making his Hercules Wimbledon debut.

Gibbons went one better than his second place in 2012, leading Hercules Wimbledon to a comfortable victory in the team event.

Surrey steeplechase silver medallist Rob Tuer led the Hercules Wimbledon runners home in the senior five-mile race in 29:32 to take second place, 11 seconds behind winner Alastair Moses from Reigate Priory. Jeremy Purnell was 20th of the 69 finishers in 35:00.

Hercules Wimbledon's men's track and field team captain Steve Davies narrowly missed out on winning a medal in the World Masters' Championships in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

He finished fourth in the men's over-35 400m hurdles in 58.26, just one-hundredth of a second behind the bronze medallist. He qualified for the final by finishing second in his heat in 58.45.

On the road, Hercules Wimbledon's Kieran White was 41st out of more than 21,000 runners in the Great South Run 10-mile race in Portsmouth on Sunday in 56:58.

He was fourth in the veterans over-35 category in his second race of the year over the distance. Clubmate Adam Harwood, in his first race over the distance, was 158th in 64:41.

This weekend, Hercules Wimbledon are sending a senior men's team to compete in the English cross-country relay championships in Mansfield.

It is the first time Hercules Wimbledon will be competing in the senior men's championship.
