Croydon Harriers helped the Borough of Croydon finish sixth out of 33 at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games cross-country championships at Parliament Hill on Saturday.

Seven Harriers made the scoring trios which counted towards borough’s points tally, with Stevie Lawrence the stand out, finishing 11th in the U17 women’s race in a field of 121 competitors.

Naomi Carty provided solid support in 34th in the same race.

In the U11s 1.5km race, Cassandra Howard was the borough’s third counter crossing the line in 27th in a field of 88.

Laura Brown also made the scoring team finishing 79th out of 218 in the U13 girl’s competition.

Omar Harhara shone in the U15 boy’s race to place 36th and third Croydon counter, while Kartik Iyer (33rd) and Laurence Johnston (42nd) were second and third scorers in the U17 men’s race.

In the U11s, Hugo Longmore just missed out on a medal by a single second, finishing fourth out of 87 runners.

Elsewhere, in the men’s race in the London Championships, Peter Chambers led the charge in ninth position over the undulating 10km course.

Kennedy Mogere (116th), Neil Aikman (161st) and Colin Oxlade (171st) completed the scoring trio with the team finishing 18th out of the 25 teams who finished.

There were 289 finishers in all and a further six Harriers competed.

On the same day, Rob Spalding helped Surrey Schools to team gold in the U17 men’s category at the West Midlands inter-counties in Warwickshire.

On Sunday, at the Brighton 10K road race, Ben Savill finished 60th out of nearly 3,000 competitors, completing the course in a new lifetime best of 35 minutes six seconds.

This weekend sees the men’s squad tackle the South of Thames cross-country five-mile race at Streatham Common.
