Two opportunist scores were the difference between Old Walcountians and Old Tonbridgians in a Surrey One 20-5 defeat at Clock House.

Despite their lowly league position, it was Walcountians who set the pace in the opening quarter against the second-placed side.

The pack out-scrummaged the visitors and, with Simon Fowler, Greg Fairchild and Joe Henderson rampant, dominated the loose as well.

It was against the run of play when Tonbridgians opened the score in the 19th minute through theie winger's converted try.

Walcountians fought hard to restore parity but they were undone again in the 29th minute when the Tonbridgians scrum-half opportunistically seized upon a loose ball as it squirted out of a scrum on Walcountians’ line and touched down for another converted try.

A penalty four minutes from the break put the visitors 17 points up at half-time.

Walcountians refused to give up and showed that their league position was a false one as they continued to take the visitors on.

However, their only reward came six minutes when fly-half Fred South finally unlocked the Tonbridgians defence with a switch of play to the blindside, and a grubber kick which he won the race to touch down.

Tonbridgians had the last say with a penalty four minutes into stoppage time.

The game marked the final appearance for flanker Sam Naylor who, after nine years and 166 appearances, is leaving to work in Dubai.

Next Saturday, Walcountians take on Old Paulines who are just above them in the league - kick-off at Clock House is at 2.30pm.
