Croydon Harriers star Peter Chambers scooped the U20 men’s gold medal at the South of Thames cross-country championship race at Streatham Common on Saturday.

The 18-year-old UCL student, finished seventh overall over the five-mile course out of 200 competitors, crossing the line in 28 minutes 35 seconds.

He was 50 seconds clear of his nearest challenger.

Chambers led the scoring quartet with solid packing coming courtesy of Colin Oxlade (90th, 34:34), Neil Aikman (105th, 34:57) and Glenn Barden (122nd, 35:59).

The team placed 16th out of the 32 clubs that closed in.

Robert Rye (136th, 37:04), Andy Del Nevo (164th, 38:50), Norman Hemming (202nd, 42:57) and Eric Campbell (227th, 59:16) were also in action to ensure Croydon finished ninth in the eight-to-score competition.

In the pick of the parkrun action, Stevie Lawrence triumphed in the women’s race at Lloyd Park in 20:49.

At Nonsuch, Alex Penfold (17:51) and Simon Loughran (18:29) were second and third.

David Chambers was fourth at Banstead Woods in 18:38.

This Friday sees the Annual club dinner at Trinity School, with Olympian Martyn Rooney on hand to present prizes to club members.
