O'Shea fumes over lost bonus point that could cost Quins dear

Director of rugby Conor O’Shea fears missing out on a bonus point on Saturday may cost his side dear this term.

Tries from Nick Easter, Danny Care and Luke Wallace gave Harlequins a 27-19 triumph over Gloucester at the Stoop on Saturday, to move them into the Premiership’s top four.

But it was the one that got away that left O’Shea fuming, when Tom Williams’ second half effort was ruled out by television match official Roy Maybank for a forward pass.

“This is going to be the most competitive Premiership ever,” he said.

“People have written us off, but we’ve knuckled down and got ourselves back in the top four, which is not bad for a team that is struggling.

“We were delighted with the win, but it should have been more.

“We’ve looked at the video  again and again and I cannot for the life of me see how the decision was reached.

“We have to look at ourselves because we should have got another try anyway.

“It is only a point, but every point is going to count at the end of the season.”

Prop Paul Doran-Jones, lock Nick Kennedy and full back Ollie Lindsay-Hague made their injury comebacks in Monday’s 39-30 A League semi-final defeat at Northampton Saints.

It means Quins really have only the Premiership to focus on, with their Heineken Cup and LV= Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

And, with the cavalry slowly returning for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle, O’Shea was up for the challenge.

“It will be nice to see Dean Richards, because he  was a tremendous help to me personally when I first took over,” he added.

“It adds nothing to the game, though.

“We went there in the season we won the title and drew 9-9 in feisty conditions, so we know the challenge we are going to face.

“We are only going to get stronger over the rest of the season and all we can do is focus on the next job in hand and see where that takes us.”
