Rugby rivals Matt Janney and Max Mather are relishing a Varsity homecoming this Christmas.

The former Richmond FC youngsters hope to go head-to-head in the 132nd Oxford University versus Cambridge University match at Twickenham stadium on December 12 – less than five miles from where they learned the game.

The two students also know each other  from their school days at KCS School in Wimbledon and will be out to follow in the footsteps of famous Varsity alumni  and rugby legends Rob Andrew, Stuart Barnes  and Gavin Hastings next month.

And Oxford’s Janney, 21, cannot wait to walk out at the place that inspired him to take up the game.

“I guess for me, it would be incredibly special to play at Twickenham,” he said.

“Not only because it’s the home of rugby, but also because it’s close to my roots.

“I remember hearing the roar of the crowd as a kid and was inspired by it, so if selected, having the opportunity to run out on to that pitch representing my university, would be a truly unique experience.”

And 22-year-old Cambridge star Mather added: “My earliest rugby memories are from playing in this area, so it’s a great privilege to run out at Twickenham.

“The Varsity match is a massive occasion for everyone involved, and the fact that I’m a local boy makes it even more special.”
