Herne Hill Harriers' female contingent dominated a Saturday of cross-country at Farthing Down, with Cathy Ansell and Saskia Millard claiming individual wins, along with two team victories.

Ansell seized a rare senior women's Surrey League success, despite finishing behind Georgie Bruinvels who was running as a guest.

Harriers finished second in the team race to Belgrave Harriers, with Ansell supported by Karen Ellison (14th), Ceri Diss (30th) and Helen Hadjam (38th).

Harriers U13 and U15 girl's squads went one better than their senior women counterparts by winning both age categories.

Racing for the U13G, Eloise O'Shaughnessy (second), Clarissa Nicholls (third) and Kayah Wilks (fifth) ensured not only victory at Farthing Down, but further strengthened their lead in the league.

It was a similar story in the U15G race, with Daisy Setyabule (third) and Zoe Tompkins (fourth) providing outstanding support to overall winner Millard.

In a show of strength in depth, Maddie Shaw, Ella Newton and Tatiana Cooke finished in positions six, seven and eight respectively in the division one fixture.

Elsewhere, Lewis Lloyd won the 123rd Gentlemen's Race at the 2013 Oxford versus Cambridge cross country varsity match on Wimbledon Common. Lloyd's success made up for disappointment last year after he struggled with illness in the same race.

Katie Snowden (Nottingham) and Hannah Edwards (Liverpool) were also racing for their university teams at the Leeds University cross-country relays over a two-mile circuit with challenging hills and some mud.

In the absence of a women's team from her university, Snowden, an 800m specialist, ran the first leg for a mixed team against mainly men and acquitted herself admirably, despite a furious early pace, clocking a time of 11 minutes, 32 seconds.

The time would have placed her a very close fourth overall among the times in the earlier women's race and only a few seconds behind the fastest, GB 1500m international Charlene Thomas.

Edwards' 13.03 first leg placed her 34th overall in the women's race and, like Snowden, suggests she is training well this winter towards her main track goals next summer season.
