Brentford's Warburton lays down the law ahead of the transfer window

Brentford boss Mark Warburton has warned his rivals that any players leaving the new League One table toppers will do so on his terms.

Goals from Clayton Donaldson, Marcello Trotta and Sam Saunders in a 3-1 win over MK Dons on Sunday mean the Bees enter the New Year at the top of the tree.

However, it also means Warburton’s stars are at the front of the shop window going into the transfer window.

He said: “If anyone comes in for any of our players, they pay our price.

“I keep reading about the fact we'll lose players. If we do then fantastic – it will be at our price. As simple as that.”

Warburton also admitted that now the Bees are top their focus changes, but he is adamant they have the players to succeed.

“The players have shown we can play at a higher level, but the only way we can get better is to learn from our mistakes,” he said.

“When we're good we play high and press all over the park. We move the ball simple, early and quick. But I just thought we've got to learn that we gave it away cheaper sometimes and dropped deep.

“It depends where you are on the pitch. We recognise that you don't take risks in the final third, be attacking, make a mistake and I don't mind.

“But I think we have to look after the ball in our own third and be sensible with our use of it.”

He added: “We've got to the top of the league. We now worry about how we approach games [rather than other teams].

“We need to recognise what we do well and keep on doing it. If we do that, we have a very strong squad and will be in good shape.”

Brentford go to play-off hopefuls Peterborough on Wednesday looking to extend their unbeaten record in League Two to 13 games, Warburton said: “If they win at Peterborough they will get four days off. If they lose? Slightly less time off.”
