Walton Athletics Club’s young throwing star Sam Mace proved age is no barrier as he struck U15s shot put gold on Sunday at the South of England Indoor Championships.
The 13-year-old threw 11.85 metres – a new personal best – in his first competitive appearance at U15 level having stepped up from the U13 age group this year.
Mace, Elmbridge’s junior sports personality of the year in 2013, finished last year ranked as the UK’s number one U13 shot, javelin and hammer thrower as well as being the country’s number two ranked U13 discus thrower.
Elsewhere, Kingston & Polytechnic Harrier’ Phoebe Law led the way as she claimed U20 girls’ Surrey Schools Cross-Country Championship gold on Saturday.
The 17-year-old clocked 14 minutes four seconds to win, while clubmate Mollie O’Sullivan, 13, repeated the trick in the U15 girls’ race in a time of 12:51.
Kingston’s Neil Wellard, 16, finished third (19:56) in the U17 men’s race, and Darcey Bourne (11:55) won silver in the U13 girls’ event.
Bronze: Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harriers’ Neil Wellard
