AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley has moved quickly to plug the gap left in defence by Andy Frampton's injury by signing Darren Jones on a free until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old left the Shrewsbury Town last week after falling out of favour with manager Graham Turner, who incidentally stepped down on Tuesday.

Jones made 57 appearances for Shrewsbury in League One before a dislocated shoulder in March put him on the sidelines, from where he has rarely moved.

Ardley said: “Losing Andy [Frampton] was a blow, and he could be out for up to eight weeks.

“But Darren [Jones] is a great signing for us. We only recently realised there was a chance we might be able to get him, and straightaway we said ‘wow, if we can get him it would be an amazing thing’.

“I was looking at several for that position, but none were of his quality. He is another Andy Frampton, he’s a leader, at a good age and a very good player.”
