Sunny Edwards is making a name for himself, although the Beddington boxer is already well-known in amateur circles.

That is because the 18-year-old is now a five times amateur national champion after a straightforward win at Sunday’s AIBA Youth Championships over Andrew Cain out of Everton Red Triangle.

Edwards, who boxes out of Repton, won all three rounds in the 49kg bout.

He said: “I have seen him box a few times so I knew what I was up against.

“I have been on GB training camps with him, and he has always been the weight above me so we’ve never met before.

“I’ve fought some of his clubmates so they knew me as well.

“But I started confidently, he came out to press me and I threw him back straightaway with some clean shots, and from there I ran away with it.”

He added: “He was probably going into the fight as the favourite.

“We’ve won the same number of titles but he was dropping down a weight so was expected to be a bit stronger.”

Edwards, who has been training at the TKO Gym with Brian O’Shaughnessey, believes he could go professional today if the mood took him, but his head says there is a long way to go yet.

He said: “Next is the GB Championship in March, and the winner is likely to represent GB at the World Championships, that’s where I’m at.

“If you get top five in the Worlds, you go to the Youth Olympics.”
