Wandsworth’s young players triumphed at the home of cricket on Sunday as the girls’ team won the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games indoor cricket title.

On a great day for the borough, the boys also performed creditably, taking a fine fifth place finish.

The girls' team, who finished 26th in 2008, has improved enormously in recent years,  and they were deserving winners at Lord’s.

After bowling out Lewisham for 32 to win their quarter-final comfortably, they faced a crunch tie in the semi-finals against defending champions Hammersmith & Fulham.

The game went right down to the last ball of Wandsworth’s 10 overs and they scampered the necessary runs to edge the title holders by just two runs, totalling 107.

It set up a final with Hillingdon, one of the surprise teams of the day.

But by now, Wandsworth’s tails were up and they posted 117 runs before bowling out their opponents for 36.

In the boys’ competition, Wandsworth were unlucky to be drawn against eventual winners Redbridge in the quarter-finals, and they just missed out as their opponents just crept past the 101 total in the final over.

Fine effort: The Wandsworth boys' team finished a credible fifth overall at Lord's

Nevertheless, they went into the play-off matches and beat both Harrow and Tower Hamlets to finish fifth overall.

Wandsworth’s Team Manager Kiyo Jason paid tribute to both his sides.

He said: “The girls did fantastic. It’s a very, very young team. Last year we got to the quarter-finals and got beaten by a good team.

"This year they learned from that and had a very hard match with Hammersmith & Fulham - that was an awesome match.

“They carried that confidence through and kept to their game plan and came out with a great result.

"It’s a great success. A lot of these girls come from a small club in Wandsworth called Spencer and they have profited from Chance to Shine."

He added: “The boys had a tough draw. The first match they played the eventual winners Redbridge and we just lost that, the next match we played Harrow who were the champions last year. We played well and got a good result against them.

"Sometimes you get a hard draw, sometimes you get an easy draw. But if you want to win, you’ve got to beat the best teams. They will learn from that.”
