Twickenham swimmer Alys Thomas is setting herself big goals ahead of this
summer’s Commonwealth Games, writes Marios Papaloizou.

The 23-year-old walked away from the BUCS Gatorade Nationals at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge with gold medals in both the 100m and 200m butterfly and added a bronze in the 50m for good measure.

Thomas finished ninth in the 200m fly in Delhi four years ago, but the Swansea University student is setting her sights much higher this season.

And, after finishing her 100m race more than two seconds faster than her nearest competitor, Thomas has found her form in time with the Commonwealth Games trials around the corner.

“I went to Delhi so I’ve got that experience under my belt and I’ve got a lot of personal goals to set so I really want to make sure I can make it there,” she said.

“I want to achieve a lot more than I did in Delhi so I’m working really hard to make sure I can do that.

“We’ll just see how it all goes and once I analyse my BUCS swims  I can start to think about what I need to work on in my training and hopefully put it all in place for Glasgow.”
