Dons boss Neal Ardley was disappointed with his side’s final home game of the season but admits a tough week has taken its toll on the club.

The Dons went down 3-0 to Morecambe United at Kingsmeadow as two goals in a minute before the break and an injury time penalty secured the visitors Football League status.

The result followed Wimbledon securing their own League Two safety with a win on Easter Monday at Plymouth Argyle and then the news that the club has been called before a disciplinary committee for fielding an ineligible player against Cheltenham in March.

Premier League club Sunderland were charged for fielding Ji Dong-Won without the correct paper work in four matches earlier this season and were only punished with a fine.

However, Dons were deducted three points and slapped with a £5,000 fine suspended until the end of next season - they have also been ordered to pay costs.

Ardley said: “I thought we started the game well today. My team talk was about ending on a high, and I think if we score in the first 15 minutes when we were very good we go on and win the game.

“We didn’t, it’s the story of our season, and the two goals we conceded before half time are unbelievably sloppy."

He added: “It’s a poor end to the season and it sums up our home form this year.

“It really has been a tough week and maybe I underestimated the effect it’s had on the players. Me and my staff are drained from what we’ve had to go through.

“Maybe it was just a game too much, and not scoring then conceding two just before half-time; I think it just knocked the stuffing out of everyone.

“Second half I wouldn’t say there was a lack of energy but we lost all of our discipline, we lost all of our quality just because we were so desperate to make it one more fight back to end the season, and we probably tried to hard to do it.”

Wimbledon finish the season this weekend when they travel to Accrington Stanley.
