Epsom CC skipper Secchi hails his fighters

Wandsworth Guardian: Secchi: Signs are good for Epsom CC Secchi: Signs are good for Epsom CC

Epsom CC skipper Danny Secchi hailed his side’s ability to get over the line after they picked up their first win in Division Two of the Surrey Championships.

After being tossed the ball at home to Chessington on Saturday, Will Moore’s 5-33 were the stand-out figures as Epsom skittled their guests for 150. In reply, Epsom toiled to 143-9 before Asim Zeb hit the winning runs.

Secchi said: “After losing last weekend, we were still in a positive frame of mind, so to get the win over Chessington was very satisfying.

“As a captain, the signs are good. This league will be so tight, every point is vital and it could come down to which team can make the most of an opportunity, and which keep can get over the line first when the odds seem stacked against them.”

He added: “Will is more of a batsman who can bowl, but he has been banging on at me to give him the ball, so I gave him the new ball and they could not handle it.

“But Fazal HaqJan at the other end is superb and I think the opposition tend to block him out and play into the hands of the other bowler. As a duo, they are great for the team.”

Epsom have made few changes to the team over the winter, preferring to recruit from the second teams and colts.

Secchi said: “We don’t have anything that resembles a player budget, and we prefer to promote from within. If there is someone worthy of a call up, they will get it.”

Epsom go to Worcester Park, this weekend.

Waqas Sagar (59) and Danny Palmer (54) top scored as Park carded 265-8 at home to Old Whitgiftian on Saturday.

Sagar then took 3-19 as the old boys crumbled for 198.
