After clocking 10.03 seconds over 100m at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix last weekend, Croydon Harriers James Dasaolu has been selected for the GB team going to the European Championships – but the sprinter insists he is not at his peak yet.

Dasaolu headed to Hampden Park, the athletics venue for the Commonwealth Games, looking to prove he deserved a spot on the British team for next month’s Euros in Zurich.

A hamstring meant the 26-year-old’s place was not certain, despite his blistering personal best of 9.91 seconds well inside the European qualifying standard of 10.20.

But, in just his second 100m race of the season, Dasaolu showed his talent, clocking an equal season’s best 10.03 to finish fourth.

The field featured the second fastest man ever in Yohan Blake – the Jamaican pulling up injured before the line – and Dasaolu insists there is plenty more to come from him before this season is over.

He said: “I don’t think I executed as well as I should have, but it is only my second race and I’m going to get better with better execution.

“It was always going to be tough going up against some of the quickest guys in the world, but you have to execute and any mistake you make you are going to pay.”

He added: “I lost by half a metre or so but I am just happy to be injury free and running 10.03 seconds again.”
