A 3-0 defeat to Australia would not give many English sportsmen any reason to feel positive, but Surbiton’s Georgie Twigg thinks otherwise.

The 23-year-old made her comeback from a groin injury to face the auld enemy at the Commonwealth Games on Monday, having feared she may miss the rest of the tournament.

The injury had brought a premature end to Twigg’s involvement in last Thursday’s Thursday’s 2-0 win over Wales and she sat out Sunday’s 5-0 win over Malaysia, which featured goals from clubmates Hollie Webb and Giselle Ansley.

England’s women face Scotland today knowing a draw would secure a place in Friday’s semi-finals and Twigg reckons the squad are in good shape to go for gold.

“It is nice to be back on the field, I am still a bit sore but obviously it is good to get out there and get the legs going,” she said.

“Australia have been playing so well recently, but I think we put in a really good performance out there.

“It is disappointing to lose 3-0, but I think we are really gaining momentum, we put in a really good team performance and we can take that into the next game.

“It is small percentages that make such a big difference at the top level and hopefully if we meet them again we have those percentages in our favour.”
