Now the dust has settled, England hockey international and Wimbledon star Henry Weir reflects on winning a Commonwealth Games bronze.

More than anything else, it was a great relief to win bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and a good way to round off the summer.

Frustratingly, fourth seemed to be the same old finishing number – that was where we ended at the Olympics two years ago, before I was selected, and also our final position in the World Cup earlier on this season.

To break through and earn a medal is crucial in our development, and collective confidence.

With one eye on the Rio Games in 2016 this is a significant step.

The fortnight in Glasgow was like nothing I have ever experienced before, being a multi-sport event.

It was great to mingle with sportsmen and women from all other disciplines and countries. One of my highlights has to be meeting David Weir, the English wheelchair athlete: Weirs unite!

The Commonwealths certainly whet my appetite for Rio 2016, so I’ll be doing my best for club and country to keep improving.

Before the new domestic season begins, though, the England players have been given three weeks off.

I will be visiting Turkey for a fortnight with my girlfriend (and fellow Wimbledon player) Laura Fell.

We are heading to Istanbul firstly, and I can’t wait to explore the Grand Bazaar, the various religious buildings and even treat myself to a massage.

After a week there we are tripping down the west coast for some beach and sunshine action.

Continued next week.
