Martyn Rooney could not hide his disappointment at not winning his 400m event at ISTAF IAAF World Challenge event in Berlin on Sunday.

The 27-year-old, recently crowned European 400m champion, from Croydon Harriers failed over the closing stages at the Berlin Olympic stadium track as he was beaten to the tape by Botswana's Isaac Makwala.

Makwala, the African champion, clocked 45.11 secondss to Rooney's 45.14 while Belgium's Kevin Borlée was third with 45.36.

Palace fan Rooney said:  "I'm disappointed, I really wanted to win. I didn't really take it a little enough on the bend so it cost me.

"I never ran quick here before (in Berlin) so 45.14 is decent and I'll take that."

Rooney has two races left in his hectic 2014 season.

He next heads off to Zagreb, Croatia tomorrow (Tuesday) for the Hanžeković Memorial meeting.

He said: "This will be my fourth race in 10 days so I'll see how my body is.

"It's been a long season but it's paid off. I still feel I can race and I want to race. The season's over too quick to not take these opportunities and races coming up."

Rooney ends his year at the IAAF Continental Cup in Marrakech, Morocco on the weekend of September 13 and 14.
