Surbiton men’s head coach Todd Williams admitted the occasion may have got to his men on Super Saturday.

The MHL Premier Division side were forced to come from 1-0 down to beat Reading 3-1 in front of a bumper 300-strong crowd at Sugden Road.

Geoff McCabe, Alan Forsyth and Matt Daly were the second half heroes for Surbiton, but it was a far from perfect display.

Williams has become accustomed to seeing his side score double figures during pre-season preparations with 12-1 wins over Conference East sides Teddington and Bromley & Beckenham in recent weeks.

And the coach reckoned they would need to buck their ideas up for Sunday’s trip to league new boys Southgate.

“After our good form in practice games, we let the occasion of our opening league fixture on the club’s open day and the fact it was a local derby to get to us.

“Our first touch was far from perfect and it took them scoring to get us attacking with real intent. But I was really pleased with the last 25 minutes.

“Now we must play that way for the whole 70 minutes. This Sunday will be a tough game away to newly-promoted Southgate who’ve signed some strong players.”
