Sutton & Epsom scored a head-turning win at London Division One South leaders Sidcup on Saturday, but head coach Jeff Parsons insists they are not yet playing at their best.

Tries from Guy Stuckey-Clarke, Kyren Ghumra and Joe Ridgley, plus eight points from the boot of Steve Munford saw Sutton to a 16-23 win.

Sutton sit seventh in the table, and they face eighth-placed Charlton Park this weekend, looking to extend their unbeaten run to four games.

Parsons cited preparation as key to the Sidcup result, but he also points towards a growing maturity in the side.

He said: “We had a good week’s training ahead of the game with the seconds, meaning we could run through what we wanted from the players in a training game.

“Sidcup are a decent side when they get their forwards working, but they are one-dimensional and we knew if we held our own in the scrum they did not have a plan B, and so it turned out.”

He added: “There were some nerves around the place when we lost the first three games, but now the guys are playing with maturity.

“They’re making the right decisions at the right time, but we’re nowhere near the finished article.”

Sutton and Charlton Park last met in the London Division Two play-off final two seasons ago, which ultimately proved successful for Parsons’ men – and now the sides are a mirror image.

Parsons said: “Charlton are a big strong side with strong forward momentum, not dissimilar to Sidcup.

“They lost their first three games, but have started to get going. They beat Twickenham with 40-odd points last weekend, so they will be a tough proposition.

“I am pleased we’re at home, and hopefully it will stop raining.”

Parsons will be without Pete Matthews (hamstring) for the visit of Charlton, while the club is also waiting on the doctor’s all clear to bring Matt Whitaker back into action.
