Malden Wanderers had an afternoon to forget as they crashed to a nine-wicket defeat at Ashtead, writes Steve Morgan.

The Stags – victorious in last weekend’s opener against Old Whitgiftians – won the toss and opted to bat, but were soon in trouble against opening pair Jordan Thomas (4-23) and Stewart Cameron (2-24), slipping from 34 for one to 41 for five.

Resistance was offered by Will Sabey (20) and Danny Murphy (12), but once they were parted Malden slumped to 78 all out.

In reply, Ashtead – with Surrey’s Dominic Sibley in aggressive mood (31 from 29 balls) – knocked off the target for the loss of just one wicket inside 12 overs.

Stags skipper James Wackett said: “We were unable to handle an impressive two spells of swing bowling. Unfortunately we didn't score enough runs to allow our bowlers to exert much pressure on their batsmen.”

Stags will look to bounce back to winning ways this weekend with a first home league fixture of the campaign against Camberley.

There was better news for Malden seconds, who held their nerve at home to beat Ashtead’s second string.

Spinner Kevin Boudville led the way (3-11 from 10 overs) as the visitors lost five wickets for eight runs to subside to 84-7, before rallying to 147 all out.

An opening stand of 63 from Paul Barford (45) and Spencer Stephens (33) had the Stags in front, but at 101 for two, a flurry of wickets had nerves jangling before they got home by two wickets with 13 balls left.

A captain’s knock of 6o from SJ Erwee and 52 not out from Oliver Mills saw Weybridge home to a seven wicket win at Normandy in the Surrey Championship Premier Division on Saturday.

The Hanger Hill side were only chasing 164 to win after Thushara Managei’s 3-18 helped reduce the hosts to 99 for six.

Richard Singleton’s spectacular 5-16 off 7.3 overs helped Chessington to second place in the early season Surrey Championship Division Two table at the expense of near neighbours Worcester Park.

Singleton’s efforts helped dismiss the visitors for 101, which Chessington chased down for the loss of four wickets. Chessington are level on points with leaders Walton-on-Thames.

Kingstonian moved up to second in Surrey Championship Division Four thanks to a three wicket win at Hampton Wick Royal.

Hampton posted 231 all out from 49.4 overs, a total Ks chased with four overs to spare although they needed 139 runs from batsmen seven, eight and nine to get there.
