Malden Wanderers’ batting woes continued with a chastening 151-run defeat at promotion-chasing Cranleigh in Surrey Championship Division One.

The Stags second innings lasted just 21 overs as they folded for 88 all out in pursuit of the hosts’ 239-8, including a dramatic collapse from 31-1 to 33-5.

Only a last-wicket stand of 25 between 17-year-old Joe Lavender – who top-scored with 15 – and Kevin Boudville brought some respectability to the total.

Cranleigh’s opening bowler Rob Lavery had a field day, taking 5-30 from 10 overs.

Earlier, Surrey teenager Rafeh Jafri had been the pick of the Stags’ attack, finishing with 3-35 from nine overs.

Cranleigh started slowly at 20-2 – opener Tom Jagot caught by keeper Cil van der Merwe off Jafri for one and Lewis Bedford run out for 18 – but the innings was anchored by an excellent 89 from just 92 balls from Tom Hollingsworth, who added 80 in a fourth-wicket stand with Jack Scriven (57).

Defeat leaves the Stags seventh in table, with one victory needed from the final three games of the season against second-placed East Molesey, relegated Farnham and relegation-battling Chipstead Coulsdon and Walcountians to ensure safety.

Captain James Wackett said: “We were poor and they played very well with both bat and ball.

"Hollingsworth’s innings was very impressive and Lavery’s spell was relentlessly on the money.”

Malden travel to East Molesey on Saturday.
