What was your life like when you were 18?

Were you in school still? Off at uni? Working a job? Still figuring out what to do with your life?

Were you still living at home or did you move out? Were you seeing anybody? What did you want more than anything?

There’s a lot about being 18 that’s awful, but if there’s one big bright spot it's that it’s okay to not have everything figured out.

It’s okay to make mistakes, for the most part. Your adult life is just starting. No one expects you to have all the answers.

Except sometimes they do expect that of you.

For the young men who make up AFC Wimbledon’s U18s, these have been an intense few weeks.

The shock win at Newcastle made them local celebrities.

In a season in which the fortunes of the senior team have stopped and stuttered, the young Dons brought some much-needed voltage.

But it also put some heavy weights on their shoulders. At a club that measures success differently, the academy has started to become a very big deal to supporters.

The kids, potentially all future senior team members, are discussed breathlessly on Twitter. #HomegrownAndHungry, they say.

They deserve all the praise and support they’ve had. But can you imagine that pressure?

Can you imagine being Alfie Egan in that tunnel? Can you imagine him scoring that goal? Can you imagine your goal not quite being enough?

Can you imagine all that when you were 18?

These are practically children and they’ve already accomplished more in life than your average internet comment section troll.

Some of them will join the senior team (Egan already has), some will go on to fulfilling lives outside of professional football. They all have many years ahead of them.

But at those moment, barely into their adult years, they were given wings and told to fly. And for one evening, they did.
