Wimbledon’s first season in League One draws to a close this Sunday with a sold-out home game against Oldham Athletic.

When the season kicked-off back on August 6, the Dons were tipped by many to make an instant return to League Two and although they have survived quite comfortably, their lack of goals in the last couple of months will be a cause for concern for boss Neal Ardley and his management team.

The Dons have only scored in two of their last 10 games with their last goal coming on March 28 when Dean Parrett converted a 58th minute penalty in a 3-1 victory over Rochdale.

Their latest shut-out came last Saturday at promotion-hopefuls Bradford City who recorded an easy 3-0 victory in front of 18,615 at Valley Parade.

While the result ensured the Bantams completed the campaign with a proud unbeaten home record, it also condemned the Dons faithful to a fruitless round trip of 430 miles having not seen their side score for something like 482 minutes.

Talking to Dons Player, an apologetic Ardley was blunt in his assessment of his team’s recent performances: “The fans have travelled all this way and they want to see us having a go. I am sorry for the performance.

“That is twice now we’ve come to big grounds with great atmospheres – Sheffield United and Bradford – but not performed.

“There is going to be some big clubs in this league. We have to be able to handle that.

“We need a good summer and I’ve not got a magic wand, we’ve not got much money, but we have to do something.

“I have a bit of clearing out to do, but I have to take responsibility.

“This is my squad that I’ve put together and today has shown that we are far short of the best teams in League One.

“We were second to everything,” added Neal. “Their centre-forwards had the run on our centre-backs and we had nothing up front.

“We had no quality. I tried to give us a system that would allow us to pass and control the game and to frustrate Bradford in the middle of the park.

“We didn’t do that, despite having more numbers.”

This Sunday’s opponents, Oldham, currently sit two places and four points behind the Dons in 17th place but have enjoyed recent victories over promotion hopefuls Bolton and Fleetwood.

The Latics have scored 31 goals so far this season — the lowest total in League One — and with the Dons’ frontline currently misfiring, the smart money has to be on a goalless draw.
