AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Dorchester Town

Terry Brown believes the title race is not over yet despite what looks like the Blue Square South season’s defining day.

Jon Main and Danny Kedwell goals minutes either side of the interval pushed AFC Wimbledon closer to promotion.

Hampton & Richmond’s embarrassing 4-0 mauling at Welling United means the gap to second place is at nine points – and all bets on the race for first place are surely now off.

But the manager, thrilled with the 2-0 win over Dorchester, says there will be no celebrating yet at Kingsmeadow despite a “fantastic day all round”.

Brown said: “You won’t find anyone here patting themselves on the back just yet. It has been a very good afternoon but it is not over yet.

“I would love to think today was the day but being a manager you can only celebrate when you’re over the finishing line.

“There’s not a long way to go but it’s long enough for us to muck it all up!

“We’re only nine ahead of Hampton, who have a game in hand but there are 21 points left for us to play for. Today was the first home game for a while and what a difference it made to our performance.

“I thought we steadied our nerves and played our football. After what have been a couple of lacklustre performances away from home, we got it down and we played.

“Our home form is incredible. The supporters of course help and Welling, here next Saturday, is another game we’ll need them.

“Our remaining away games are very, very difficult. Eastleigh, Hampton and Bromley – blimey! Our home results can win it for us.”

Nick Crittenden missed the away team’s best chance after being put through following Tom Davis’ lapse in concentration. James Pullen was equal to it before the strikers stole the show.

In time added on in the first half Main did what he does best.

A quiet first 45 was put to one side as he sprung into life and connected with Sam Hatton’s pass to slot skilfully past Gareth Stewart.

Three minutes after the re-start and the young Magpies’ wings were clipped.

Elliott Godfrey superbly found Danny Kedwell, the striker was too strong for the shaven-headed Ashley Vickers, and the delicate lob broke his goalless nine-game scoring run.

Kedwell hit the post, substitute Kezie Ibe twice came close to a debut goal and a missed Chris Hussey penalty all could have added to the scoreline but home win number 14 of the season was never in question.

Brown added: “At home especially you just always know Mainy and Kedwell will come up trumps.

“We do need goals from other areas – that’s why we’ve added the players we have in the week – but we’ve put ourselves in a very strong position.”
