Brixton Squash sensation Azlan Iskander reckons his victory over the world number one will give him great inspiration for his 2012 PSA World Tour campaign.

The 29-year-old Malaysian-born world number 10 ended the ATCO PSA World Series Squash Finals on a high last Friday at Queen’s Club in West Kensington after surprising Englishman James Willstrop in three hard-fought sets, 11-6 6-11 11-9, ending Willstrop’s 17-match winning streak.

But Iskander, who arrived back from a Christmas break in his home country of Malaysia a couple of days before the start of the Platinum-status tour finale, was already out of the reckoning for a semi-final place after losing both his earlier group games to Egyptian’s Mohamed El Shorbagy and Karim Darwish.

“It gives me some redemption for the rest of the season so I was happy to get this win,” said Iskander, who last year won one event on PSA World Series Tour – the second-tier Bluenose Classic in Halifax, Canada.

“I only got back from Malaysia on Monday night so I still had the jet lag in my legs. But I felt good on court and it was nip and tuck.

“Playing on the PSA World Series, in particular the finals, was my dream.

“It was something I wanted to do since I was 14 and when I began playing on the circuit.

“It’s just the whole experience of being there and, hopefully, if I do make it back next year then I will be a bit more of a threat. I want more of this.”

Iskander, who has won 14 career titles since entering the professional ranks 12 years ago, is now targeting a further rise up the rankings having achieved his 2011 goals.

“The big part of my goal last year was to get in the world’s top 10 and I did that,” he said.

“This year, I want to get into the single digits and work my way up the rankings.

“It’s a fine line because there are so many good players behind and front of me and it’s all about playing well at the right time.”

Iskander is next in action at the $115,000 JP Morgan Tournament of Champions Platinum World Series event in New York from January 20.
