Croydon Harriers men’s team finished third at the Surrey County Road Relays at Wimbledon on Sunday, ending a wait of more than 30 years for a team medal at the event.

Peter Chambers kicked off proceedings in the six-man event with the fifth fastest time of the day over the three-mile course in 14 minutes 51 seconds to handover in second.

Ben Savill (15:31, 25th overall), Alex Penfold (16:03, 40th), David White (15:49, 36th) and Jake English (15:36, 29th) kept Croydon in the hunt, with the squad third heading into the final leg.

David Chambers (16:27, 52nd) valiantly held onto bronze in a thrilling finale, edging a chasing Hercules Wimbledon’s B team by 15 metres.

The last time Croydon’s men won a team medal in this event was in 1983, which was also bronze.

Kartik Iyer provided non-scoring support in 17:07, 74th out of 106.

The women’s squad were also in relay action, with two-time Surrey Road League champion Lisa Harris continuing her good form on the first leg for Croydon with the third fastest time of the day in 16:44.

Handing over in second, Stevie Lawrence (19:30, 31st) maintained Croydon’s position. Miriam De Souza and Rhadika Shan completed the team and the squad would finish twelfth out of the 15 teams who closed in. The M40 team of Andy Del Nevo, James Moore, Neil Aikman and Colin Oxlade finished eighth in the 13-team field in the Masters competition.

In the pick of the parkrun action, David Brown picked up his fourth win at Riddlesdown, while Jessica Moore finished first at Lloyd Park.

Other top five finishes included Jake English (second, Hilly Fields), Sam Clayton (fourth, Lloyd Park) and David Chambers (fifth, Greenwich).
