Peter Chambers led the Croydon Harrier charge at the Surrey cross-country championships at Lloyd Park on Saturday by winning gold in the junior men’s race.

The 19-year-old UCL student, who finished 24th for Team GB at the European championships last month, triumphed on the treacherous 6km course in 18 minutes 46 seconds, 10 seconds clear of his nearest rival.

Jake English (14th, 20:46) and Kartik Iyer (20th, 23:56) completed the scoring trio picking up team silver along with Chambers for their efforts.

Stevie Lawrence gained the next best individual finish of the day, crossing the line in sixth in the junior women’s race, with Atlanta Drummond (23rd) and Beth Matlock (29th) providing support for the team to finish fifth.

The U15 girls team also fared well being led home by Jessica Moore in 22nd, as did the U13 girls who were spearheaded by Kyra Sethna-McIntosh in 51st.

Robbie Tambling was first home for Croydon in the U13 boys squad in 63rd, with the team finishing 10th overall.

Miriam De Souza (122nd) and Radhika Shanmuganathan (129th) kept club flag flying in the women’s race.

Brunel student Alex Penfold sneaked inside the top 100 in the men’s race in his senior bow in this competition.

The 20 year-old finished 90th over the 7.5 mile course in 50:29.

Glenn Barden (118th, 52:18), Alan Burn (119th, 52:22), David Brown (125th, 52:56), Mark Lynch (127th, 52:57) and Mark Maginn (135th, 53:34) completed the scoring six with the team finishing 17th.

A total of 39 Harriers were in action overall.
