Kingston & Polytechnic Harrier Phoebe Law is out to better her international debut performance when she gets on the start line for the World Junior Cross Country Championships later this month.

The 18-year-old romped home in 21 minutes 27 seconds to win the final of the British Cross Challenge in Birmingham on Saturday to secure a spot in the Team GB squad heading to China on March 28.

The Surbiton High School student won team gold for GB at the European Junior Cross Country Championships in Bulgaria before Christmas, but was a non-scoring athlete as she finished 14th.

And the high flying Harrier, coached by Richard Holt, is out to better that individual showing in the Far East.

“I’m amazed – I really did not expect to do that at all so I’m really happy to win," she said having pipped rivals Harriet Knowles-Jones and Bronwen Owen to the win.

"I’ve really enjoyed the Cross Challenge. I did it last year for the first time and came fourth, and was really jealous of all the other athletes getting their plaques. I really wanted to come back and do even better.

“It’s amazing to have qualified for the World Cross and it is brilliant to wear the GB & NI vest again, it is what I have always dreamed of.

"I want to enjoy the experience, but, hopefully, go better than I did in Bulgaria.”
