Herne Hill Harriers Nicholas Atwell enjoyed two visits to the podium at the South of England AA Senior Indoor Championship at Lee Valley over the weekend.

Atwell secured the area championship gold medal in his main event, the 400m, winning in a useful early season time of 49.06 seconds.

He also demonstrated very good short speed for this time of year in claiming a silver medal in the 200m, clocking 22.15secs.

At the same meeting, Tayo Andrews, who does not turn 20 years old until March, stood on the podium of a senior men’s championship for the first time as he was the bronze medallist in the high jump with a best clearance of 1.95m.

In the women’s events, 400m specialist Jessie Knight was racing even further under distance than Atwell as she placed a very decent fourth in the 60m, clocking 7.79 seconds.

Braving the cold outdoors were Harriers’ men’s and women’s teams at the third round of four of the 2XU Surrey League cross country races of the winter.

The men’s races were on Mitcham Common and the women’s at Reigate, with Harriers teams placing first in the U13 boys and in the combined U15 boys and U17 men’s races.

In addition, the U13 girls were second, U15 girls third, senior men fourth and senior women ninth teams.

The pick of the cross country results for club members over the weekend was a superb victory for Stacey Ward, who was racing in the Metropolitan League at Horsenden Hill for her second claim club.

Ward celebrated her birthday in style with a winning margin of 16 seconds ahead of her closest rival as she rounds into good form approaching the business end of the cross country season, with all boding well for the Southern and National championship races soon to come.
