Herne Hill Harriers’ Vic Maughn smashed a sixty-year-old record on 22 January after winning the Veterans Athletics Club’s Cross Country Championships on Wimbledon Common for the fourth successive year on Saturday.

Finishing in second place was Harriers’ Mike Boyle, who was 1st in the M50 category, while Tony Harran finished in 4th place and Dave Wilson in 29th. Brian Shave finished in 38th place taking 1st in the M75 category.

At the Sussex Masters Cross Country Championships at Lancing on Saturday, Keith Newton won his seventh successive Over 40 title, eclipsing the 30-record held by John Luxford.

Elsewhere, Herne Hill Harriers’ young athletes climbed up the national rankings after recording some fine performances in the London U15/U17 Indoor Games at Pickets Lock.

Federick Afrifa-Owusu ran 24.24 seconds in the U15 200m race, which now puts the youngster in fifth place in the in the national rankings.

In the U17 events, both Taj Johnson and Nicholas Grant move into the top fifty in the national rankings in the 60m event.

Meanwhile at Guildford, over 40 young Herne Hill athletes took part in the Surrey Indoor Sporthall competition with 13-year-old Jermaine Graham winning the two lap race and the U13 boys’ shot events.

Breagha Campbell jumped 5.96m in the standing triple jump to place 2nd, while Anna Broughton was 2nd in the U13 girls’ two lap race.

Over in Essex, Rajdave Singh finished an excellent sixth place in the Benfleet 15 mile race with a time of 1hr 34.40, with Mike Cummings finishing in 7th. Suzi Richards won the senior ladies race in 60th place with a time of 1hr 47.50.
