Herne Hill Harriers’ Saskia Millard capped off a successful season with a superb sixth place at the National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill on Saturday.

The young athlete, who won bronze at the South of England Championships last month, crossed the line in 11 minutes, 59 seconds to be the first Harriers’ U13 girl to finish.

Breagha Campbell came 13th in 12:10 as the U13 girls’ team finished fifth, one of their best ever results.

Not to be outdone, the Harriers’ U13 boys’ followed suit and also came fifth out of 39 teams.

Paul Burgess led them home in 20th in 11:27.

The senior men’s team finished 16th out of 125 teams as their form dipped from previous months.

Chris Busaileh was their first finisher in 125th in 40:18, followed by John Kettle in 131st in 40:26.

In the senior women’s race, Suzie Richards came 55th in 31:28, leading the team to 18th.

“All in all, this was a decent overall turnout and performance from our members, younger and older,” said senior men’s cross country captain Geoff Gerwood.

“There were some exceptional individual and collective efforts from our two youngest teams competing, which bodes very well for next year and, hopefully thereafter.”

Elsewhere, Michael Wheeler claimed a bronze medal in the men’s shot at the British Universities Indoor Championships when he threw 15.55m.

Michella Obwiaku and Marvin Popoola also won bronze medals at the England Athletics Indoor Championships in the U15 girls’ shot (10.40m) and U17 men’s 60m (7.03 seconds).
