At the beginning of the Surrey Championship Premier Division campaign, Weybridge skipper Joel Pope was targeting a top three finish – now he is dreaming of winning the title.
A remarkable one-wicket win at Sutton on Saturday keeps Weybridge in third, four points off the top.
Leaders Wimbledon take on second placed Sunbury this weekend, meaning a Weybridge win at home to struggling Malden Wanderers at the same time would lift them to second with three games remaining.
After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, and losing their opening three games of this season, Weybridge have lost just once in 11 games, catapulting themselves into the leading pack.
Pope said: “At the beginning of the season we were talking about taking each game as it comes and aiming for a finish in the top three.
“But now we definitely have an eye on winning the league. We lost at Sunbury a few weeks ago and that set us back a little, but we are focussing on the ultimate goal of the title.”
Weybridge remain in contention following a dramatic day at Sutton where Robbie Joseph at number 11 was the hero hitting 14 off the last over to secure nine vital points.
Having elected bat, Sutton raced to 312-6 in their 50 overs. In reply, and despite a slow start, Weybridge got over the finish line with three balls to spare.
Adam Hose (86) and Pope (50) were among the runs, but it still came down to Joseph to seal the win.
Pope said: “Sutton came out all guns blazing and their skipper Johann [Myburgh] batted beautifully.
“We could not get going with the bat and we lost Luc [Durandt] and SJ [Erwee] one after the other, but Adam and Shane [White] batted really well in the middle.
“Then I got myself out, and we still needed 40 runs off four overs. Tristan Caviet at 10 batted superbly and then it all came down to Robbie [Joseph] needing 12 off the last over.
“He hit two fours through the covers, and then hit one out of the ground, over the trees and into the car park. It was fantastic.”
