Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian completed their dramatic turnaround in fortunes as they clinched Surrey Championship Division Three promotion ahead of Addiscombe on Saturday, writes Hamish Mackay.

The pair met at Lime Meadow Avenue and Mids, who were facing a relegation battle a month ago, completed their redemption with a 19-run victory and what had seemed an unlikely promotion.

In the process they denied Addiscombe, who had been around the top two all season, a third successive promotion by just three points.

Despite the unlikeliness of their rise to the top, captain Richard Nowell asserted promotion had always been the target.

“We aimed for promotion at the beginning of the season, we knew we had the players but the league is very close," he said.

"We lost our way a bit mid-season but just when things were looking bad our win against Old Rutlishians changed our mentality.

"Other results went our way that weekend and suddenly we realised that with a bit of luck we could climb the table.

“A lot of the teams in the League are very similar, ultimately it comes down to your desire to win and our lads had that in abundance.”

After a well earned winter break, Mids will have to contemplate life in a tougher league, in which Nowell feels they can cope.

“We have an excellent combination of experienced players and younger lads coming into the team who are more than capable of doing the job," he said.

"It’s especially nice to see the younger generation coming through, we’ve invested in training facilities and it’s good to see it paying off.”

Elsewhere, Old Whitgiftians and Purley ended their Division One seasons in dramatic fashions.

Old Whit were set a mammoth target of 338 by Malden Wanderers, who hit that in just 37 overs, and had a good go but ended 13 runs short on 325-9.

Purley on the other hand were bowled out for just 45 by East Molesey, with extras their highest score with 14.

Chipstead, Coulsdon & Walcountians missed out on promotion in Division Four by six points and Warlingham ended bottom of Division Five with just 15 points.
