SURREY CHAMPIONSHIP

PREMIER DIVISION/T20

An opening partnership of 145 between Danny Miller (63) and Conor Young (100) set the scene for Ashtead’s thumping 151-run win over Chipstead Coulsdon & Walcountians in round two of the Surrey T20 Championship. Having set the visitors 199 to win, Ashtead’s Tom Homes (3-4) and Aaron Rose (3-11) were too good and Chipstead crumbled to just 47 all out. Ashtead face Beddington the next round.

In Premier Division action, Ashtead were also victorious, beating Guildford by seven wickets at Woodfield Lane. Homes (4-67) and Jordan Thomas (4-49) were among the wickets as Guildford carded 212 all out. With the bat, Danny Miller (75) and Stewart Cameron (70*) ran down the target inside 34 overs. This weekend, Ashtead travel to Beddington.

Beddington and East Molesey had to share the points after their Premier Division fixture was abandoned due to rain. Beddington will be hoping for better weather this weekend when they go to Sutton, who also suffered a Saturday wash-out against Weybridge.

Wimbledon were one of the few teams to avoid the wet weather last weekend, and they will be wishing otherwise after a 71-run defeat at Normandy saw them drop a place to fourth in the Premier Division table of the Surrey Championship. After being put into the field, Wimbledon’s Robbie Gunn’s figures of 3-34 off 10 overs were the only highlight as Normandy declared on 246-4. With the bat, Wimbledon struggled to get going with skipper Matt Spriegel top-scoring on 31 en route to being skittled for 175. Wimbledon will be looking to get back to winning ways this weekend at home to Sunbury.

DIVISION ONE

Banstead picked up their first Division One win in four attempts on Saturday, thanks in no small part to the bowling heroics of Dan Gale. The trip to Walton on Thames appeared to be getting away from Banstead when the hosts reached 122-4 – however, Gale completed a five-wicket haul (5-42) to dismiss Walton for 148. With the bat, Neil Baker (53*) top scored and hit the winning runs with nine wickets down for a one wicket win. Banstead host Chipstead Coulsdon & Walcountians this weekend.

Leatherhead recorded back to back wins last weekend to stay in the Division One promotion hunt. However, Saturday’s one-wicket win over struggling Spencer was touch and go – after being handed the ball, Leatherhead’s Adan Dyson led the attack taking 4-47 as Spencer carded 166 all out - featuring Max Scarr's knock of 62. Leatherhead skipper Matt Laidman (64) provided the base for a run-chase that had number 11 Mark Farrant facing eight balls, before Jonathan Tribe at eight (38*) hit the winning runs. Leatherhead go to Old Rutlishians this weekend.

Defeat at home to leaders Cranleigh has left Malden Wanderers hovering perilously close to the Division One trapdoor. However, they gave the visitors a decent run for their money when Will Sabey’s knock of 60 helped Wanderers reach 215 all out. Cranleigh reached the target in the 55th over with seven wickets down. Wanderers host Valley End this weekend.

Old Rutlishians are now without a win in four Division One games and they sit uncomfortably in the bottom two. After being put into bat by visitors Chipstead Couldson & Walcountians, the Old Ruts were dismissed for 166 in 52 overs – a target snaffled by Chipstead inside 34 overs. This weekend, Old Ruts play host to Leatherhead.

It was a disastrous weekend for Old Whitgiftians thanks to a nine-wicket thumping at Valley End in Division One of the Surrey Championship. James Leck (46) top-scored as the Old Boys stumbled to 111 all out in just 26 overs – with four wickets falling to run-outs. With the ball, Luke Bajer took the only wicket to fall as Valley End were home and dry inside 13 overs. Old Whitgiftians host Walton on Thames this weekend.

Walton on Thames missed the chance to climb into the top two in Division One after a surprise one-wicket defeat at home to struggling Banstead on Saturday. Things were going well as Walton reached 122-4 – however, the dismissal of top scorer Anthony Alleyne (49) sparked a collapsed, and the hosts were all out for 148. With the ball, Mark Bainbridge took 4-48, but he could not stop Banstead creeping over the line in the 49th over. Walton go to Old Whitgitfians this weekend.

DIVISION TWO

Bank of England (BoE) are still searching for their first win in Division Two of the Surrey Championship following a four-wicket defeat at home to Epsom. After electing to bat, BoE carded 200 all out, with Richard Rawlings (41) leading the charge. Epsom's Godfrey Stevens (4-47) and Will Moore (4-44) were the thorns in BoE's side. Stevens was also in fine form with the bat, hitting an unbeaten 90 as the visitors ticked off the runs in 42 overs. This weekend, BoE go to Farnham, and Epsom host Esher.

Esher dropped into the bottom half of Division Two after an eight-wicket defeat at home to runaway leaders Camberley. After being put into bat, Esher’s Will Edwards (60), Alex Martin (74) and Shoaib Khan (52) helped guide the hosts to 214-6 off 55 overs. However, there was no stopping the leaders and James Day hit an unbeaten 101 off just 53 balls to see them home. Esher are at Epsom this weekend.

The wait for a first league win of the season continues for Purley following a 114-run defeat at promotion-chasing Dulwich. After being set 214 to win, Purley’s batting order showed little fight – Jason Batson top scoring on 34 – and they were all out for 99 inside 23 overs. Purley, second from bottom, go to bottom club Egham this weekend.

Worcester Park go into this weekend’s Division Two top of the table clash at Camberley in fine fettle boasting five games without defeat. Saturday’s win at bottom club Egham was as comfortable as they come after they skittled their hosts for just 49 – James Harrison taking 4-21 off 12 overs. The win was secured inside just 12 overs.
