Crystal Palace boss Tony Pulis saw a silver lining to his disappointment after the Eagles went down 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur.

The defeat, along with other results, dropped Palace to the foot of the Premier League, but it could have been very different had Jason Puncheon converted a first half penalty.

Second half goals from Christian Eriksen and Jermain Defoe did for the Eagles, who now look ahead to the visit of Stoke City this weekend.

Pulis said: “We played well in the first half, and we were disappointed not to be ahead at half-time.

“No one could deny we deserved to be winning at that point.

“But overall I was pleased because we played well and had the little things gone for us, like the penalty and when Mile Jedinak’s shot was cleared off the line, it could have been different.

“At times we dominated the game, but to not come away with any points is very disappointing.”

He added: “Jason’s penalty was a shame, he’s changed his mind at the last second and you cannot do that.

“You have to make a decision and stick to it, like he did a couple of weeks ago.

“But we played some good football. We often don’t the credit we deserve. We played exciting stuff through the middle and on the wings, I think we got something like 22 crosses in – we just need to convert them.

“We’ve gone bottom of the table because West Ham and Sunderland both won, but it is extremely tight down there.

“If you said this would be the situation with 17 games to go, I would have taken it because we have as good a chance as anyone else.”

Pulis will be dipping in to the transfer market for at least two new names, and he has in mind the kind of players he wants.

“The fact Spurs can bring Defoe off the bench shows this is not a level playing field in the Premier League,” he said.

“We need to strengthen, there is no doubt. We have some irons in the fire but I am hoping to attract someone with Premier League experience who has maybe been left to one side by a club and wants to come to us to prove they can still do it at the top level.”

Spurs boss Tim Sherwood said: “We were taken by surprise by Palace’s attacking options.

“They were powerful in wide areas, and the only positive thing from the first half was that it was still 0-0.

“In the second half, we matched their appetite and desire, and eventually our quality shone through.”
