Hampton & Richmond Borough joint manager Paul Barry has criticised the attitude of his players following a disastrous start to the season, writes Josh Doherty.

The Beavers sit bottom of the Ryman Premier League, having lost five out of five - conceding 15 goals and scoring only three.

This weekend they host Lewes, another side struggling with only two points from six games, looking to end a run of three consecutive defeats at the Beveree, where the visitors have scored four goals.

Barry said: “We brought in some new guys as replacements, and it seems they don’t have the character we thought they did - maybe it’s a question of mentality.

“It’s not just the new guys, a lot of the players from last season aren't pulling their fingers out either, and we’re struggling as a result.

“There will have to be changes.”

The Beavers finished 12th last season, and hopes were high they could build on that following a solid pre-season.

And despite their dire start, Barry remains confident he can turn the season around.

“The players have ability, that’s why it’s frustrating, we showed that in a good pre-season,” he said.

“Although we lost 1-0 to Margate on the opening day of the season, we put in a real good performance and matched them for shots on target and chances created.”

He added: “If we can just get together and all start to pull our weight we can change our fortunes.”
