Sutton United boss Paul Doswell was in a land of frustration on Saturday after a controversial and lacklustre 1-1 draw at home to Concord Rangers on Saturday.

United, missing the injured Dale Binns, fell behind on the hour despite amid claims the ball went out of play in the build up to the goal.

Debutant Glen Southam was booked for his part in the protest that followed, and the former Chelmsford skipper was then sent off for a second booking after a rash challenge.

Doswell introduced Jessy Reindorf and the young Frenchman levelled for United, and could have had a penalty moments later – much to the manager’s consternation.

“Just before they scored, the ball was a yard out – so we stopped. Their bench will admit that,” Doswell said.

“How can the linesman not see it? And it was not just one decision, I felt we had a clear penalty when Jessy was brought down just after we scored.”

He added: “I don’t know what Glen has said to the referee, if it’s dissent, but then you cannot go make a silly tackle.

“He feels he did not say anything to the ref, but I can understand why people get frustrated when they see things like that what happened in the run up to their goal.”

However, Doswell did not lay all the blame at the feet of the officials.

He said: “For the first hour we were terrible, and it took us to go down to 10 men and 1-0 down to liven up.

“We could have gone on and won the game, but for 60 minutes we were dreadful.”

He added: “I don’t know what was wrong, sometimes you don’t. We played really well last week, had a good shape about us.

“It hurt us bad that Dale [Binns] was not fit – because we didn’t have that shape.

“Within 10 minutes, Marvin [Williams] felt no power in his Achilles, and we had too many people not playing well enough, which has happened before.”

After his goal, Reindorf has done enough to convince Doswell he deserves his place in the starting line up when United go to Whitehawk on Tuesday night.

Doswell said: “Jessy changed the game for us and he’ll be playing Tuesday.

“He was starting games, but didn’t play well enough at Boreham Wood and lost his place. Now he’s done enough coming off the bench in the last two games to make a difference.”

Ahead of the trip to Sussex, Doswell is sweating the fitness of Williams and Callum Hart.
