Ross Stearn says he has his fingertips on the National League South title, but he knows there is an obstacle to overcome before he can grab it.

The winger has made 53 appearances for Sutton United this season scoring 10 goals, and he played his part in Saturday’s vital 2-0 win over Ebbsfleet.

United are now three points ahead of Ebbsfleet and only need another three points from a possible six to pull off one the most amazing comebacks in non-League football.

Standing in their way on Saturday are Chelmsford City – who beat Gosport Borough 6-1 last weekend, but who have also won only two on the road in the past 10 games.

Stearn, a summer acquisition from Bath City, said: “We’re within finger tips of the title, we’re almost touching it, but we still need to win the next game to guarantee it.

SUTTON UNITED: We need more of the same from the "sea of yellow", says Bailey

“All the fans are in the bar now [after the Ebbsfleet win], partying, but as players we need to stay grounded and make sure we get the job done, and then I am sure we can have a big party then.”

He added: “What we’ve done is an unbelievable achievement, 24 games unbeaten, winning 19 and drawing five.

“In this league, everyone beats everyone else – there isn’t another team who have done what we’ve done - it just does not happen.

“No-one thought we could catch Ebbsfleet, maybe including us, but as soon as we got on a roll we have not looked back.

“We’ve been clawing them back week by week and now we’ve got them, we’re not giving up.”

United have suffered their fair share of injuries during the season, robbing them of the services of Ryan Burge, Jamie Collins, Simon Downer and Dan Fitchett at various times.

But, according to Stearn, the fact United have kept their unbeaten run going and continued to reel in Ebbsfleet is testament to the strength of the squad.

“In a team you can always pick out stand-out players, we’ve got Tom [Bolarinwa], Craig [Eastmond] and Fitch, but the run we have gone on, everyone is rotated,” he said.

“It has definitely been a team push, everyone has played their part.

“And what a push it has been, and hopefully one more win and over the line.”

As it was last weekend, Stearn is hoping it shall be again when it comes to the support from the terraces.

More than 2,000 United fans cheered the side to victory over Fleet, and this weekend they could be cheering the side to the title.

Stearn said: “We’ve never had that kind of atmosphere here before – it was loud, it looked good – it’s a big ground to fill and we managed to fill it and it was unbelievable.

“You looked left, you looked right, everywhere you looked the places that are normally empty were full.”

He added: “Fleet had unbelievable travelling support, but more than 2,000 were Sutton fans and there is no reason why we should not the same amount here again.

“If they were here for Ebbsfleet, then surely they want to come back and hopefully see us win the title.”
