With a foot in both camps, Kevin Phillips is struggling to pick an FA Cup semi-final winner between Crystal Palace and Watford – but he has made his choice.

The Hornets gave Phillips his break as a pro footballer in 1994, but then Palace reignited his career at the age of 40 in 2013.

Phillips’ penalty in the play-off final win Watford extended his career in to the Premier League, and now the teams go head to head at Wembley again – but with a very different prize for the winner.

Despite preferring to sit on the fence, Phillips has reverted to the formbook and tipped Watford.

He said: “It’s a hard one to call – I don’t think there will be a lot of goals, and not a lot in it.

“I cannot really give a prediction, but if you go on form, you may be have to tip Watford.

“They have come up from the Championship and achieved so much this season.

“Some of the performances they have put in have been tremendous and they carry a goal threat – so they are capable of beating anyone.”

He added: “Palace are struggling to find that little bit of form, but they have shown they can create opportunities, they play well with pace and they have goals in the team.

“But it is a one-off game. It is all about which team turns up on the day with the right mind-set, who plays as a team and not as individuals will come out on top.”

Phillips has also tipped his hat to the Palace fans who have turned Selhurst Park in a Galatasaray-type cauldron where opponents fear to tread – and he says they need to transfer that to Wembley.

“Everyone considers Selhurst Park an intimidating place to go, the fans create such an atmosphere, it is becoming one of the best places to play,” he said.

“Everyone talks about Stoke City and their 12th man, but believe me, on its day, Selhurst Park can be just the same.

“The fans wil need to create that atmosphere once again if they want to get through to the final.”
