Wilfried Zaha is now “fully focused” on the season ahead with Crystal Palace following substantial interest from Tottenham during the summer, according to Andros Townsend.

The 23-year-old winger was a late summer target for Spurs, who tabled an offer of around £15m for his services.

Palace were adamant their prized asset was not for sale and Tottenham failed to land the England international.

Zaha opened his account for the season with the winning strike at Middlesbrough on Saturday – the ex-Manchester United man also provided summer signing Christian Benteke with an assist in the 2-1 victory.

Townsend, who left Newcastle United earlier in the summer to join Alan Pardew’s side, said: “The window has closed now and all the uncertainty surrounding players has gone. Wilf can settle down and do what he did today.

“Wilf is a good lad. Now the window is closed he is fully focused on giving us the best season that he can and if he puts in more performances like that I am sure we will be all right.”

Wandsworth Times:

The narrow win at the Riverside Stadium provided Palace with their first three points of the season.

The club had only won two games in 2016 before the weekend but Townsend insisted the team were not overwhelmed by their dismal record this year.

The 25-year-old added: “Last season is last season. We might not have won in the first two or three games but we didn’t think beyond that.

“We wanted to win to get our season up and running. But it wasn’t because we were looking for the first win in 20 we wanted the first win in four.

“We knew when we signed Christian that if we got balls into the box he would score goals and that’s what happened.”
