It’s important in football to pick up points even when you aren’t playing well, and that’s exactly what Sutton United managed against Guiseley at the weekend.

I don’t think anyone will argue that United played well at all, but Connor Brown’s quite frankly hilarious own goal gave United a platform, which was just about defended for the rest of the game.

Ross Worner had an excellent game with several great saves keeping the visitors at bay in the second half, and Simon Downer was solid yet again.

I think the main defensive issue at times was a lack of shape, which thankfully wasn’t punished on the counter as effectively as Chester or Braintree for example did in recent weeks.

Going forward we did look fairly lively, but the final ball was often missing.

Despite these issues I’m feeling much happier than I did when we played well but lost at Wrexham or Eastleigh – at the end of the day it’s a results business and United are now nine points clear from the relegation zone; the same distance they are from the top of the table.

We’re at the place in the standings where a couple of wins in a row could push us forwards as play-off contenders, while a few defeats will have us looking nervously over our shoulders towards the bottom four.

The visit to Dover Athletic on Tuesday night will be an interesting one with the Kent side looking to bounce back from a thrashing at Chester, while United will be looking to break their four-game run of away defeats.

Play like they did at any of the last three, albeit with a bit more luck, and they should be able to do so.
