Rumours suggesting Sutton United will switch venues to cash in on their FA Cup tie against Arsenal have been dismissed as “absolute nonsense” by the club’s chairman.

Bruce Elliott said the U’s “never had any plans” to move the fifth round tie from Gander Green Lane to nearby Selhurst Park, despite the ground only being able to hold 5,000 fans.

His rebuttal came after the Daily Mail published an article yesterday (Tuesday, January 31) claiming the club was considering maximising their revenue from gate receipts at the 26,000 seater stadium.

The FA states that clubs must share receipts from ties with each team taking 45 per cent and the remaining 10 per cent going to the governing body.

Mr Elliott said: “It’s absolute nonsense. It has never been discussed or mentioned as a possibility.

“We have a meeting tonight and for some reason they thought it was going to be on the agenda and even if we wanted to move the FA are keen they don’t want a change.

“They want teams draw out of the hat first to play at home. It’s just the way it is.

“Changes can be made if a pitch is not safe, but we’ve shown that we can have games here. There is nothing different about the tie, except for the team we are playing.”

The FA Cup fifth round tie between Sutton and Arsenal will be played at Gander Green Lane, on the weekend starting February 18.
