Bees boss Mark Warburton can remember the dominant Leeds United teams of the Seventies, but he knows history counts for nothing in football.

Brentford take on the Yorkshiremen at Griffin Park tomorrow following back-to-back defeats to fellow former top flight sides Norwich City and Middlesbrough.

United dominated English football in the 70s under Don Revie and were the last team to lift Division One title before the inception of the Premier League.

But, as their dramatic fall from grace at the start of this century proves, reputations will count for little come three o’clock on Saturday, says Warburton.

From page 56 “I’m from the generation that can remember the Bremners, the Hunters and Clarkes of those great teams. You can real the names off,” he said.

“But we are not playing against those teams, we are not playing the badge or the history it is just another game.

“We will respect the fact they have had a run of good results, but that is where it ends.”

Brentford are without a goal in two games, while they have conceded seven at the end, but Warbuton his men are far from a team in crisis.

“We were outstnadinbg against Norwich and if we play like that every week we will win nine times out of 10,” he added.

“At Middlesbrough it was nip and tuck until the first goal and then we were poor in the second half.

“We have been through it at the training ground and the boys have worked to put things right.

“The boys realise we have set ourselves high standards. The team has learned what happens when you let them slip – you get punished.

“We have had a good start to the season and apart from one poor half of football we have been excellent.”

Brentford travel to another former Premier League team when they face Watford at Vicarage Road on Tuesday.
