Boss Uwe Rosler has insisted Marcel Eger has answered his critics after helping Brentford shut-out League One leaders Charlton Athletic.

The 28-year-old former Bundesliga centre back has struggled to adapt to the pace of life at Griffin Park since his summer switch and was roundly criticised over his role in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Huddesrfield Town.

The former St Pauli star, who has been in and out of the starting line-up this term, bounced back with an assured performance alongside Miguel Llera in Tuesday’s 3-0 Johstone’s Paint Trophy win at the Valley.

And Rosler, who had the whole squad in on Sunday for clear-the-air-talks, reckons Eger delivered the right response.

“I think Marcel was criticised a lot and he knows himself that he didn’t have his best game against Huddersfield,” said the manager.

“But it was a great response from him and the whole team.

“I felt it was important to meet each other on Sunday for one hour and talk it out and then we had a good training session.

“On Monday, everyone came in, in good spirits and I think that was crucial to coming here in a positive frame of mind.”

Goals from Blair Adams, a Kevin O’Connor penalty and Toumani Diagouraga gave the Bees safe passage into the next round of the trophy on Tuesday.

And Eger could only match his manager’s delight with the turnaround.

“When you have a bad experience you have to stand up again. That shows you are professional,” he added.

“When your head goes down you have to lift it up, and take the next chance. It was a good reaction from the whole team, that was the main thing.

“To beat Charlton at their ground must be a good performance.

“We looked very comfortable and I never had a fear that something would happen.”
