Wayne Hennessey says he hopes Julian Speroni stays at Selhurst Park next season.

The January signing from Wolves had been kept out of the Crystal Palace team until making his debut in Sunday’s final day 2-2 draw at Fulham.

That was the first game Speroni had missed in 2013-14 and prompted fears he may not play for the club again with the Argentine’s contract set to expire in the summer.

But his main rival for the number one shirt has joined the huge groundswell of support demanding Speroni is offered a new deal at Selhurst Park.

Hennessey said: “He’s given me great advice.

“We get on really well. We’ll speak to each other over the summer.

“He’s a fantastic goalkeeper. I wish him all the best.

“Julian Speroni is a fantastic keeper and a credit to Crystal Palace.

“I hope Crystal Palace look after him now.

“He’s had one of the best seasons ever. He’s on fire and hopefully he comes back a Crystal Palace player.”

Despite the healthy professional rivalry for a first team spot, Hennessey points out it is nothing personal.

“It’s business at the end of the day,” explained the 27-year-old Welsh international.

“He’s a fantastic bloke, I’ve known him for years playing against him and he’s always been a great credit.

“There is a goalkeeping union, we are really close.

“In the summer I’ll give him a call and we’ll talk.

“That’s what goalkeeping union is all about.”

Hennessey has had to bide his time since completing his switch from Molineaux but reckons patience just goes with the territory for anyone in his position.

“It’s part of goalkeeping,” he said.

“I’ve done a bit in my career. I’ve had stages where I’ve played and I haven’t played.

“Whoever’s got the jersey you look after them and whatever you need you’re there for them.

“Hopefully I’ll come back pre-season, have a good pre-season and you never know.”

“We’ve got a fantastic bunch here.

“If we can keep everyone together it’ll be perfect.

“We know what works now. We’re all one big unit – the staff and everybody.

“If we can keep hold of everyone I think we’ll fancy a great chance next season.”
