Crystal Palace’s Argentine keeper Julian Speroni believes Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to West Ham should not count against caretaker boss Keith Millen’s chances of taking the job permanently.

The Eagles were convincingly beaten by the Hammers to leave them pointless from the two opening games, both of which have been under Millen’s stewardship following Tony Pulis’ shock exit.

But Speroni has urged onlookers to look beyond the results when deciding Millen’s long-term future at the club.

“You can’t judge someone on one result,” the Palace stopper said.

“We see how well and how hard he works on the training ground and I believe that results will come.

“The atmosphere has been good in training and it is a shame that we couldn’t show that out there today.

“I don’t believe today’s result will affect his chances.

“Obviously, if you win, the chairman may look on it in a different way but I wouldn’t judge someone on one result.”

The 35-year-old has also backed the club for resisting the temptation of rushing into making an appointment.

“As good as it would be to get someone is as soon as possible, whether it be Keith or another manager, it could make things worse if we rush into a decision,” he added.

“So I think the chairman will take his time and make sure he gets the right man in to take us forward.”
