Crystal Palace assistant manager Keith Millen wants the Palace players to "make history" in this afternoon's FA Cup fifth round clash with Liverpool.

Eagles fans who remember the 4-3 semi-final win over Liverpool in 1990 know the significance of a cup tie with the Anfield giants, although many of the current squad were not born then.

But Millen, who attended the 1990 FA Cup final replay as a fan, says manager Alan Pardew will be quick to underline the importance of Saturday's tie to his players.

Millen said: "I'm sure there will be a bit of banter with the gaffer and the lads tomorrow. I'm sure he'll remind them of what he did last time round.

"It's good to remind them of the history the club has, and I'm sure Alan will tell them a few stories tomorrow. I think it's about them now making history themselves.

"The current players, their goal is to make history themselves. They want to be part of a successful Crystal Palace team that hopefully wins the FA Cup one day. Then you're a hero further down the line."

He added: "We want to have another day like that. I was watching and cheering Palace on and I'll be doing the same tomorrow.

"We're getting closer now with each game that goes by and it's a big incentive for us."

Pardew has overseen a resurgence of form since taking the reins at Selhurst Park, and Millen was quick to point out the effect the manager has had on both the dressing room and the training pitch.

Millen said: "He's been really clear in what he wants the team to do. He understands before that we were very structured and well-organised, a good defensive unit, didn't concede and counter-attacked well. That was really our DNA before.

"He understands that, but he also now wants us to develop our game and have more possession. I think you can see now the stats show that.

"We look dangerous, we look like we're going to get balls in the box and score goals and that's really what Alan wants us to develop.

"The players have really bought into what he's asked. We're on a great run, the confidence in the lads is there. They're enjoying what Alan's asking them to do and I think that's really showing on the pitch."
